Gabriel Square

Cool QMotion control plays a blinder at award-winning St Albans development.

Stylish, automated blind control from QMotion is making its mark at Gabriel Square, an impressive multi-award-winning contemporary scheme by developer, Meyer Homes, in upmarket St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Designed by architects, Benson & Forsyth, with interiors by Conran and Partners, Gabriel Square is a collection of 80 new smart homes, including spacious town houses and one, two and three-bedroom apartments set around a landscaped garden square. The cool, modernist look and feel of the development is crafted around modernist principles which respond seamlessly to its architecture, in a sequence of harmonious spaces, created using vertical and horizontal connections. In recognition of its strong design credentials, Gabriel Square has recently secured the Home of The Year (in a multi-unit scheme) award at the Sunday Times British Homes Awards as well as winning gold in the Best Interior Design category and silver for Best House at the WhatHouse? Awards.

Anticipating the strong appeal of the scheme to design-led, tech savvy homeowners, Meyer Homes instructed Hertfordshire-based Webstract Smart Technology to provide an integrated home solution as part of the project.  Their brief was for home integration that could offer a level of heating, lighting and door entry control, as standard, with the potential to easily extend and add audio-visual technology to meet individual needs and tastes.

“We based our solution on Control4,” says Andy Lloyd of Webstract. “We felt this platform would be a great fit for the contemporary design of Gabriel Square, would comfortably meet all the client’s requirements and would also satisfy the current and future needs of homeowners. Because QMotion integrates natively with Control4, it was the perfect choice for automated blind control on the scheme.”

QMotion Roller Shades were installed in the majority of properties at Gabriel Square to fit the large floor to ceiling windows. They provide a taste of the comfort and convenience afforded by automated blind control and form part of a larger smart home solution from Webstract, incorporating intelligent lighting, Heatmiser heating control and automatic door entry all seamlessly integrated and accessible through the Control4 system. Webstract has also installed structured cabling throughout the development to ensure that each home is ready for multi-room audio, HDTV and other services at a later date. Additional QMotion Roller Shades can also be easily added in more rooms throughout any of the Gabriel Square properties, if required.

Homeowners can effortlessly group and automate the blinds to raise and lower to 99 selected, programmable positions. QMotion’s patented manual-override command also allows homeowners to operate the blinds by hand, if required, without damaging the automated mechanism.

QMotion UK blinds are ultra-energy efficient thanks to the company’s patented spring-counterbalancing system which keeps battery power consumption to an absolute minimum and delivers near silent operation in every application. Meanwhile, the minimal side light gaps of just 13mm ensure an attractive installation. Homeowners at Gabriel Square can also choose from a full range of high-quality fabric design and colour options to meet their particular design tastes, should they wish.
